The Stephansson House
July 2018
It was such an honour to be one of eight Alberta poets chosen to read at the 15th annual celebration of poetry at the Stephansson House, a provincial historical site near Markerville, Alberta, to celebrate the life and poetic contribution of the Icelandic immigrant, Stephan Stephansson.
"As a historic site, we exist to celebrate the life and work of Stephan G. Stephansson, a well-known Icelandic-Canadian poet who made his home in the Markerville area in 1889. Widely regarded as the greatest Icelandic poet since the Middle Ages, Stephan G. Stephansson is best known for Andvokur, or “Wakeful Nights”, a six volume set of poetry.
The event consists of an afternoon of original poetry readings, live music, and Icelandic treats. It is an opportunity for both published and unpublished poets to engage with a local audience and network with other writers.
This has always been a terrific event for people to come and share their passion and love for poetry, and this year we’re expanding our event with local and area artists. This year’s theme is “family,” inspired by the experiences of Stephan, his wife Helga, and the rest of his family as they travelled to Alberta to establish an homestead and raise a family. We welcome submissions of original poems that speak to or evoke the idea of family."
